Abstract:Objective To evaluate the efficacy of arthroscopic meniscoplasty for meniscus injure in patients over 50 years of age. Methods From January 2010 to January 2014, 50 patients of arthroscopic meniscoplasty for meniscus injury in patients over 50 years of age in the third affiliated hospital of Anhui Medical University were studied. There were 23 males and 27 females with an average age of 58.2 years(range from 50 to 71 years). There were 22 left knees and 28 right knees. According to Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L) Grading System, there were 6 grade 0 patients, 11 gradeⅠpatients, 15 gradeⅡpatients and 18 grade Ⅲ patients. The patients were divided into two groups (Group A: 32 patients of K-L grade 0, gradeⅠand gradeⅡ; Group B: 18 patients of K-L gradeⅢ). Lysholm score and VAS(Visual analogue scale) score were used to evaluate each patient in pre-operation and post-operation.Results All the patients were followed up with a mean duration of 13.6 months (range, 11-24 months). Lysholm scores and VAS scores before operation(61.54±18.35 and 8.8±1.5, respectively) in group A were not higher or less than those in group B(60.92±17.82 and 9.1±1.0, respectively). There were not statistically significant differences between the two groups(all P values>0.05). VAS score in group A was lower than that in group B at post-operation. There were statistically significant differences between the two groups(t=11.382, P<0.01). Lysholm scores is not higher or lower(P>0.05). Lysholm scores pre-operation were less than those post-operation both in group A and B(t=15.127, t=18.272, respectively, all P values<0.01). VAS scores post-operation were less than those pre-operation both in group A and B(t=26.022, t=8.871, respectively, all P values<0.01).Conclusions Arthroscopic meniscoplasty for treatment of meniscus injury in patients over 50 (Kellgren-Lawrence grade 0,Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ) appeared to have a certain effect of knee function improvement and pain relief. However, satisfactory result of pain free of arthroscopy for meniscus injury with K-L grade Ⅲ is lower than grade 0, Ⅰ, Ⅱ.
