Abstract:Objective To evaluate the relationship between the presence of tortuous internal carotid artery (ICA) and vascular risk factor. Methods Retrospective analysis 87 participants were performed by digital subtraction angiograph or computed tomography angiography from June 2013 to January 2014. They were divided into tortuous group (n=40) and control group (n=47). The age, gender, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, cigarette smoking and the presence of ischemic angiocardiopathy or cerebrovascular disease were compared between the two groups to screen the risk factor of tortuous ICA.Results There were no significant differences between the two groups in gender, smoking, diabetes, hyperlipidemia and ischemic angiocardiopathy or cerebrovascular disease(all P values>0.05). The mean age of tortuous group was older than that of control group. Prevalence of hypertension in tortuous group was higher than that in another group (all P values<0.05). Logistic regression confirmed that the age and hypertension were related to tortuous ICA.Conclusions The age and hypertension may be risk factors of tortuous ICA. They may be involved in developing process of tortuous ICA.
