Abstract:Objective:To investigate the clinical features and treatment for posterolateral knee and leg pain caused by fibrosis and calcification of lateral head of gastrocnemius. Methods:Patients with posterolateral knee and leg pain caused by fibrosis and calcification of lateral head of gastrocnemius 25 cases (28 sides) were collected. Lateral X-ray showed obvious small os fabella 22 cases or only faint small calcification 6 cases posteral femur lateral condyle. Results:All cases underwent 6-24 months follow-up (average of 12 months ) . Static and dynamic common peroneal nerve damage symptoms disappeared after operation, posterolateral knee pain disappeared or relieved significantly. Conclusions:Fibrosis and calcification of lateral head of gastrocnemius is the main reason of posterolateral knee pain, most accompany with common peroneal nerve damage symptoms. At present, false negative rate is fairly high due to lack of knowledge about this disease. Resection of fibrosis or calcification masses and neurolysis of common peroneal nerve can get definite curative effects.
