Abstract:Objective This study aims to explore the research progress of unilateral biportal endoscopy spinal surgery (UBE/BESS) for treatment of lumbar degenerative diseases. Methods A total of 162 literatures on the development history of UBE/BESS and the treatment of degenerative diseases of the lumbar spine published before June 2022 were searched in Chinese and English databases such as CNKI, Wan-fang Data, Wei-pu Data, and PubMed. After excluding studies with inconsistent content, unavailable original text, repetitive content, and review literatures, 67 articles were finally included to summarize and analyze the research progress of UBE/BESS technology for the treatment of lumbar degenerative diseases. Results UBE/BESS technology has many advantages in the treatment of degenerative lumbar diseases but also has disadvantages. Current studies are limited to small cohorts with short-term follow-up; as such, studies on multi-center, large cohorts with prospective long-term follow-up are needed to further evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of this technique. Conclusion sIn the current environment, uniportal spinal endoscopy is the main minimally invasive spinal surgery in China. Although UBE/BESS is not an entirely new procedure, UBE/BESS is expected to make up for the defects of low surgical efficiency of uniportal endoscopy in dealing with complex conditions and play an advantage in the treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis and endoscopic fusion. This technology also has the advantages of comprehensive field of vision and flexible operation and could be an effective tool for minimally invasive spine surgery.
